Search Console now adds up several countries in one filter

Compare tab vs Filter tab

Summary

Market-group reporting can now be read in the Performance report itself, and the group's CTR and average position come out weighted by Google rather than averaged by hand.

Anything that averaged per-country figures will produce slightly different numbers from here on. The shift is a reporting correction, not a traffic change, and per-country rows are still worth keeping.

Google is updating Search Console’s Performance report filters so the Country filter accepts more than one country at a time. Search Engine Journal’s report covers an Oct. 6 Google Search Central post on LinkedIn that says: “If you operate in multiple countries, you can now view their combined Google Search traffic.” The screenshot in that post shows the Country filter with two tabs, Filter and Compare, a checkbox beside each country, and three countries ticked on the Filter tab.

Until now the report would not produce a group total. Search Engine Journal reports that Google’s Performance report help page, on the day of the announcement, still described multiple countries as something you had to handle with a comparison, and comparisons are capped at two items with one running at a time. Query and page filters already accept several values at once, including regular expressions. Country, device, search type and search appearance were the dimensions that did not.

Clicks and impressions were never the hard part. Pull Germany, Austria and Switzerland as three separate exports, add the columns, and the totals are correct. CTR and average position are where hand-built reports go wrong, because both depend on impressions: a group CTR is total clicks over total impressions, and a group average position weights each country’s position by its impressions. A report that averages the three per-country figures instead drifts, and the error grows the more unevenly traffic splits across the group. Google’s post does not make this point, but a filter that returns the whole group as one row does that weighting for you.

Two parts of the announcement stay vague. It says the update covers devices as well as countries without saying what changed for devices, and the screenshot only shows countries. Nothing in the post says the Compare tab’s two-item limit has moved, so side-by-side comparison is still a pairwise exercise even once the Filter tab accepts a list. Rollout is the other open question: the post says the filters are being updated “today” and does not say whether every property gets it at the same time, so an account still showing the old filter is worth rechecking rather than reporting.

What to do

  • Open the Country filter on one property and look for checkboxes. That, not the help page, is the reliable signal of whether the change has reached the account.
  • Rebuild any market-group report that got its CTR or average position by averaging per-country figures. Those numbers will shift when they come from the filter instead, and the shift is a correction to the reporting rather than a change in traffic, the same way that splitting a sitemap changes only what Search Console reports.
  • Keep the per-country rows alongside the group total. A regional average absorbs a single-market move, which is exactly the kind of signal that showed up when French sites lost CTR in proportion to their AI Overview exposure.
